WESTMORLAND — The Westmorland City Council honored Chaz Hayden, a long-time resident of Westmorland, with the community service award for his outstanding service to the children and youth of the community.
Hayden has volunteered at Westmorland Elementary School, and many community activities in general. According to Westmorland Parks and Recreation director Mary Ann Smith, Hayden is always there to help out, no matter what the activity. His volunteering takes him to the library reading program, to the church and to the Little League games.
“Every time there’s a community event, he steps up to the plate, says ‘What can I do?’ and he starts at it,” said Smith, “He’s there, he’s stepping in and helping not only with his own child, but every child.”
As for Hayden, he was honored that the city would do something like for him. However, he gave credit to the children who he cares about.
“Without the kids and the community I wouldn’t be here, to be honest,” said Hayden.
Community members filled the room, from adults to students from Westmorland Elementary and from the Little League teams Hayden helps out with. All were there at City Hall to support and see him recognized.
Hayden was chosen by recommendation from members of Parks and Recreation as well as other members of the Westmorland community. Smith said many people, including those who were present at the meeting, said the award was long overdue.
Once the meeting was over, duty called as Hayden and his team hurried off to their Wednesday game.
