IMPERIAL COUNTY – June 3rd, Tuesday, more votes were cast by absentee ballots in the Imperial Valley than voters at the poll, by just under 1%.  The overall turnout percentage of voters  topped 21%, a very low percentage, historically primaries have lower voter participation than elections for national offices.

However, poll attendants at the voting booth at Gateway Church in Brawley, Tuesday thought the turnout was higher than normal.

“It is a very good turnout, better than usual,” said poll watcher Isabel Garcia.

Accompanying Garcia was Trini Marlow, supervisor for the precinct. Marlow has been working for the county, running elections, since the 1980’s.

“We arrive around 6:00 a.m. Tuesday morning to set up the machines and make sure they are working properly. This is the culmination of meetings at the election division, to finally having the day arrive. I live in Westmorland and can’t leave my post, so I always vote by absentee ballot.”

Although Marlowe may be a veteran poll precinct supervisor, her son, Mario Carrillo is a beginner in the family tradition. Now 18, Carrillo may work at election polling locations, and at the tender age of 18, this will make his second election job. His first was in November.

No voters came during the interview, however, one woman dropped off several absentee ballots.

The valley voted heavily for the state democratic tickets, the top two vote- getters going on to the run off election in November. With the states new voting rules, the top two receiving politicians will be in the run off no matter their party. It could be Democrat vs Democrat, as in some of the races determined on Tuesday.

Here are the election results for how the valley voted for state wide offices.
