Imperial Valley high school baseball will experience an exiting start to April as the 2016 IVL season not only began its campaign, but local teams will be taking their talents to the big boys field at San Diego Padres’ home Stadium, Petco Park, in San Diego on Friday, April 8th.
Imperial Valley’s Calipatria Hornet baseball squad will have an opportunity to represent the Valley on the biggest stage taking on Julian High school, a team coming into the contest with a 4-3 record and ranked 7th in CIF San Diego Section Division V. The Hornets sit at 8th place in the division with a record of 5-7.
“I’m glad these kids have a chance to play on a professional field. It gives them great experience and memories to take with them forever,” said Calipatria High baseball head coach David Corona.
The Hornets are looking to rebound from a tough last few outings in San Diego as this matchup with Julian will be a possible playoff for the Division V San Diego Section playoffs.
“As the season is coming, we have faced great competition these last few weeks. We didn’t do too well, but I believe facing these highly skilled teams has made us stronger and showed us what we are capable of doing. I believe we will do well during the season, said Corona. “We must take it one game at a time.”
Also coming this week is opening League games for IVL competitors Brawley, Central, Calexico, Southwest, Holtville, Imperial and Palo Verde Valley High Schools as Brawley and Central High hope to defend their shared IVL crown from last year, and hopefully win it outright this season.
