Imperial County Fire Chief Tony Rouhotas said the Imperial Valley Strike team left at 10 p.m. Sunday night to join forces with other firemen to battle the ongoing Sand Fire at Santa Clarita, CA.
The team consists of firefighters from Brawley, Holtville, Calexico, the County, and Calipatria. The still out-of-control Sand fire has been burning since last week. At last report, the fire has burned 33,000 acres, destroyed 18 structures, with 20,000 evacuations in the areas of Sand Canyon, Bear Divide and Little Tujunga, and threatening thousands of others in its path.
Fear of shifting winds could make matters worse officials reported.
One fatality has been reported. As of Monday morning the fire was just 10 percent contained and continuing to spread. The Imperial County Strike Team joins over 2,900 firefighters already on scene.
