A man was killed and a woman was seriously mauled when a pair of dogs attacked them in the unincorporated Salton Sea community of North Shore this morning, authorities said.
Deputies dispatched at 6:17 a.m. to an area in the vicinity of Sea Gull and Dolphin drives found a deceased man, who appeared to have been a victim of a dog attack, in the front yard of a home, sheriff’s spokesman Armando Munoz said.
About the same time, the deputies heard a woman screaming for help and realized she was being attacked by the dogs, he said.
The deputies drove toward the woman with their patrol car’s lights and sirens activated, which caused the dogs to run away, Munoz said.
The woman was tended by paramedics at the scene, then taken to a local hospital for treatment of major injuries, Munoz said.
Deputies and Riverside County Animal Control officers found the dogs, believed to be pit bulls, at a local residence, he said. One of the dogs was extremely aggressive and had to be tranquilized, after which both animals were captured, Munoz said.
The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
