TUCSON, AZ – A day of fun on the sand dunes turned deadly for a Tucson man.
Authorities said Brent Reed drove a sand rail, or dune buggy, with four passengers in the Imperial Sand Dunes recreation area (on the way from Tucson to San Diego) on March 1st when he went over the edge of an embankment in an area known as “Test Hill.”
The sand rail rolled over, fell into a canal and ended up underwater, according to Chris Boudreaux with the California Highway Patrol.
The four passengers swam to safety but Reed’s body was found still seat belted in with serious head trauma. One of the passengers was later identified as Reed’s 8-year-old son, who was not injured.
Police said too much speed was a factor in the crash.
