EL CENTRO – The Feds Feed Families “Ultimate Food Gathering Championship” is a local competition that started three years ago between Naval Air Facility El Centro (NAFEC) and the El Centro Sector Border Patrol.
Last year, the Calexico ports of entry joined the competition and emerged victorious; winning the competition and taking the title belt from former champions, NAFEC.
Since the competition started, over 150,000 pounds of food have been donated to the local food bank on behalf of the local federal agencies involved. This year’s contest will run through the month of September.
According to local food bank officials, the Imperial Valley Food Bank is short by roughly half a million pounds compared to last year’s donations.
“We really hope that by the three agencies working together in friendly competition, we can make an impact to help the Food Bank’s situation, as well as raise public awareness about the issue of hunger in the Imperial Valley,” said Border Patrol Agent Trevor Ambrosini, with the El Centro Sector Border Patrol Public Affairs Office. “Ideally this will motivate others in the community to donate as well.”
The Feds Feed Families food drive is a national event coordinated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Since its inception in 2009, the food drive has collected over 39 million pounds of food nationwide.
