“Taking Back Main Street” event a success

Don Wharton and George Nava present 1st place Hamburger Cook-Off award to Los Comperos

BRAWLEY – Saturday in the Brawley Plaza Park the Brawley Main Street Committee held their 1st annual “Taking Back Main Street” event.

“Taking Back Main Street” is an event to invigorate and promote the economic vitality of Brawley’s historic Main Street and to make it a destination.

Hundreds of people gathered to see many family oriented activities that included Luche Libre wrestling, a Hamburger Cook-Off competition, live music with Pure Magik, a classic car club, and many vendors.

The City of Brawley closed off a section of Main Street with cement pylons with a REACH Air Ambulance helicopter at one end and the Brawley Fire ladder truck with an American flag raised high into the air suspended at the top of the ladder at the other.

The Hamburger Cook-Off winner was Los Comperos.

Desert RV took the People’s Choice award.

Guilty as Charred came in second for the cook-off and Brawley High School Basketball took third place.

A special award was given to Mary Miller of Superior Furniture.

Miller received the Star Award for her years as a downtown Brawley business that recently suffered a fire that left her business a total loss. She continues to do business at a neighboring store until her location can be rebuilt.

“From the looks of things, everyone had a great time,” said George Nava, Brawley City Councilmember and Brawley Main Street Committee. “It was a great success thanks to all of our sponsors and the community support. Comments have been very positive. We’re just thrilled.”
