el-centro-police-department logoEL CENTRO – On Saturday, July 16, at 10:35 a.m., officers were dispatched to 1000 Adams Avenue in reference to a call of a Hispanic male brandishing a deadly weapon. The reporting party stated the suspect, Victor Ruby Jr., a 22-year‐old transient from El Centro, entered a local business and allegedly brandished a large knife toward the clerk. Officers obtained a clothing description for Ruby and began searching the area.

At 10:47 a.m., the dispatch center received a call of a Hispanic male in the 700 block of Park Avenue attempting to open doors to vehicles parked in the area. The clothing description provided by the caller matched the clothing description for the earlier suspect, Ruby, in the brandishing of a deadly weapon call that occurred 12 minutes prior.

While searching for Ruby, officers were flagged down in the area of 7th Street and Commercial Avenue by an individual who reported his pickup had just been stolen. As the stolen pickup was leaving the area, it reportedly hit a parked vehicle located on the street.

At 11:24 a.m., Sgt. John Seaman was in the area of 8th Street and Adams Avenue when he located the stolen pickup parked on 8th Street near Adams Avenue. Sgt. Seaman parked behind the pickup and noticed two subjects near a motel. As he approached them, he recognized one to be Ruby. Ruby reportedly jumped the fence and took off running towards the north alley of 700 Adams Avenue and continued jumping fences in an attempt to elude officers.

Officers were able to set up a perimeter to contain the suspect who reportedly continued to jump a number of fences and traverse several yards. Officer Steven Singh was able to detain the suspect in a dirt lot, while the knife was recovered in one of the yards the suspect had run through. Ruby was booked at the county jail on suspicion of felony possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor charge of brandishing a deadly weapon and resisting and delaying law enforcement.
