EL CENTRO – The Central Spartans hosted the Calexico Bulldogs Friday, with the Bulldogs putting huge pressure and making a comeback in the second half that resulted in Central squeezing by with a final score of 28-21.
Both teams took to the field trying to get the win for this conference match up, and the Bulldogs began the chase for their first league win with a kickoff for the Spartans.
Spartans QB Rick Guzman (#30) led his team down the field with his own rushes, moving them into the red zone. Guzman rushed a total of 172 yards, and firing up the team, scored a touchdown early in the first quarter making the score 7-0.
When the Bulldogs’ offense took the field with just under six minutes left, QB Frank Moreno (#11) brought them to the red zone and with 4:54 left on the clock, drove the ball to the end zone for their first touchdown of the evening. Missing the extra point, the score was 7-6.
After the successful drive, the Bulldogs kicked off to the Spartans, who gave the ball to Jeffery Legas (#22) who rushed 27 yards giving the Spartans a much-needed gain. However, Calexico’s defense shut down Central for most of the second quarter, forcing the Spartans to punt on many of their possessions.
With 9:10 left in the half, the Spartans got the ball back, making another successful drive with a run by Nick Ramirez (#25), who had a total of 117 yards for the evening.
On the next play, QB Guzman made a big gain, giving his team a fresh set of downs. Guzman handed the ball off to Ramirez once again, who achieved the first down, bringing his team to the red zone. Guzman handed the ball to Jonathan Jazek (#3) who drove through the defensive line for another Spartan touchdown.
Heading into the locker rooms, the Spartans had an eight point lead over the Bulldogs and high hopes for the second half of play, with a score of 14-6.
At the start of the second half, Calexico’s offense proved up to the challenge, quickly scoring their second touchdown, making it a close 14-13.
With the Spartans hungry to get more points on the board, Ramirez answered with a rushing touchdown, securing the Spartans’ 21-13 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Calexico still played to win, scoring another touchdown and cutting the Spartans’ lead. Desperate to win, Coach John Tyree went for the two extra points and got it, giving the Bulldogs eight solid points to tie the game 21-21.
However, the Spartans answered back with a touchdown by Guzman, securing the win for his team.
The final touchdown brought the final score of the game to 28-21, and gave the Spartans their second win in league play. They will take to the road to face the Brawley Wildcats for the annual Bell Game rivalry November 4.
The Bulldogs will host El Centro’s Southwest Eagles in hopes of getting their first win in league play.
