Spartans Make Short Work of the Bulldogs in Volleyball Match Up

CALEXICO – The Calexico Lady Bulldogs volleyball team hosted the Central Spartans Thursday September 22 at De Anza Junior High where the Spartans made short work of the Bulldogs, winning three sets to zero. With this loss, the Bulldog’s league record dropped to 1-3, and with the Spartans claiming victory, they keep their undefeated league record of 3-0.

Calexico started off slow in the first set, giving the Spartans a quick lead. Spartan Alexis Floras (#9) shone for her team with 22 kills and four aces.

But Calexico changed the tempo of the game when they scored 13 points and edged the score closer to the Spartans. Spartan Angelica Camacho (#8) played great defense against the Bulldogs in the set, providing eight digs to stop the Bulldogs from tying the score. With Calexico down by three, Central eagerly picked back up on offense, scoring multiple points to end the first set 25-13.

In the second set, Calexico had another chance to equal out the playing field. Scores bounced back and forth until the end with both teams scoring back to back.

Calexico’s Iran Alvarez (#22) gave it her all, scoring six points and gaining 11 kills with two aces in the close game. With the score tied at 25, the Spartans took control for the second time of the match gaining two points and winning the second set 28-26.

In the third set, the Bulldogs faced the odds once last time in an attempt to win a set and keep the chance of victory alive. In an exciting set, the game was much like the second with both teams rallying back and forth until the end.

But Central’s Samantha Herrejon (#10) slammed six kills and five blocks giving the Spartans the momentum to score and defend against the Bulldogs.

The Central Spartans made short work of the Bulldogs winning the third set 25-20 and keeping their undefeated league record. Central will move on to face Southwest High School for their next conference match September 27 and another chance to keep a perfect record.
