EL CENTRO – The Southwest Eagles hosted Chula Vista Spartans on May 27 for round three of CIF baseball. With Southwest down one in CIF play, winning the game was crucial for the advancement of the Eagles onto round four. Unfortunately, Chula Vista proved too strong for the Eagles, besting them 5-0.

Chula Vista started the first two innings strongly, scoring two runs to take a two-zip led early in the game. Southwest defense held the Spartans up until the fifth inning when Aiden Rubio (23) led the inning with a hard-line drive to the opposite field for a single. Ricky Yoquigua (11) bunted to third for a single and moved Rubio into scoring position. Southwest pitcher, Ethan Ross (30), arm became heavy as he walked Rafael Iribe (2), bringing in a run. The score was 3-0, Spartans improving their odds over the Eagles.

Chula Vista came back to the plate in the sixth and seventh innings scoring two more runs to secure their lead further. Rafael Iribe had another big inning with a speedy line drive to left field for a double. Alex Celiceo (9) then bunted, moving Irebe to third base while securing first. With Iribe on third, he stole home in a quick dash scoring the final run for their team in the seventh bringing home the final score, 5-0, Spartans.

With Chula Vista demonstrating their skills, it knocked Southwest out of CIF play ending their season with an 18-11 record.
