EL CENTROÂ â€“ The Southwest Eagles hosted the Central Spartans for a home track meet, April 28, where Southwest boys won overall, but Centralâ€™s girls came out on top in their events. The Southwest boys scored Â 71, while Central boys mustered a 56. Central ladies finished the meet with a total score of 67 and Southwest Spartanâ€™s with a score of 60.
Central ladies dominated in the 200-meter dash, taking first, second, and third in the race. Alyssa Valdez grabbedÂ first place with a personal best time of 27.13. Karen Ortiz also had a personal best time, nabbing second at 27.28 Â and Karina Soto came in third with a score of 28.16 adding toÂ team points.
Central’s Arely Pacheco ran the 300m hurdles at 50.85 Â in oneÂ of the closer races beating her closest opponent, Southwest’s Alyssa Miranda by 1.39.
For the boys, Southwestâ€™s Romeo Corona finished ahead of Central’s Steve Gonzales with a time of 15.54, Â breaking away from Gonzales by .49 of a second. TheÂ close race gave the Southwest the drive they needed to keep Central from the win. In the 200-meter wheelchair race, Mauricio Pena from Southwest gave it his all to aid his team in victory with a personal best of 59.24 seconds.
At the end, Southwest boys took the win and Centralâ€™s ladies pulled ahead of Southwest for a win. Southwest will move to to face Brawley at the Wildcats field for their next meet and Central moves to play Calexico at home for their next meet.[envira-gallery id=”76562″]
