Showmanship tests the mettle of youth

4H winners
Junior and senior 4H-ers celebrate their Round Robin Large animal placements

IMPERIAL – One of the many highlights of showing animals at the fair are the mid-week livestock contests where the best compete against each other in the Champion Drive for market animals and Round Robin for showmanship.

For Round Robin, being chosen as one of the top two showmen of your species is an honor, but only the beginning of one’s fair experience. Not only do the youth learn the commercial aspects such as prime cuts or current market value of their animal, but anatomy, diet, and health needs.

Round Robin decides who is the best showman, not just for their species, but for all the animals in the classifications of small or large animal. These youth dig deep and learn the market, health, and showing aspects of each of the different eight animals they will be showing.

Local expert judges are chosen who then ask pertinent species questions, and with a keen eye, judge the youth’s showing ability.
