CALEXICO — SDSU-IV Steppling Gallery will present its first gallery show of the year – Madrecitas. It will be an Expo en pequeno forato – a traveling group exhibition of small scale works of art. The exhibition runs from Thursday, September 17 thru Friday, October 16th.
There will be an opening reception in the gallery, on the SDSU IV campus quad, Thursday, September 17th from 5 – 8 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy live music by Victor Bosc, and partake in light refreshments. The event is free and open to the Valley community.
The exhibition of small scale works is produced in a variety of mediums by contemporary visual artists, designers and filmmakers from Belgium, Hungary, Japan, Spain, the US, and Mexico.
Madrecitas is an exhibition project that originated in 2009 by artists and instructors Odette Barajas and Bernardo Olmedo. The name comes from the word ‘mother’ in Spanish, in addition it referring to our female parent, it also connotes something small or tiny.
Steppling Gallery will present a selection from over 300 works that were exhibited at La Casa de la Cultura, Mexicali during April and May 2015, and mini-films/shorts from Videofest 2K14’s Bienal Internacional de Cine y Video Contemporaneo, selected by Jose Luis Campos.
In previous years, Madrecitas has been held in varied venues in Mexicali such as CETYS Universidad, Bar Monaco, Galeria Atmosferas, and in the United States at The Imperial Valley Desert Museum in Ocotillo and Juanita Salazar Lowe IVC Art Gallery.
The event is partially sponsored by the Associated Student Council.
