BRAWLEY-A Petition hearing and a Preliminary setting was held at the Brawley Courthouse for Scotty De La Torre, 27, Thursday morning. De La Torre is on trial for alleged murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while being intoxicated and also for DUI Alcohol/Drugs with Bodily Injury.
The public defender, John Willis, and the representative for the people, Wayne Robinson, stood in front of the judge debating over the newly set preliminary hearing dates for De la Torre.
The dates have been pushed forward once again; the new date for the preliminary hearing will be November 20, 2014 at 9 a.m. at the Brawley Courthouse.
“If the prosecutors are not ready on that day, then we move the preliminary hearing to the 21st, then if they are still not ready, we will move it to the falling Monday on the 24th of November,” said Willis, about pushing the preliminary hearing forward.
De la Torre was involved in the accident that occurred on August 10, 2014 at the intersection of Highway 86 and Wildcat. De la Torre was driving a full size SUV and failed to stop at a red light at the intersection. De la Torre than impacted into the vehicle that was stopped at the intersection, which that car then launched into 58-year-old Brawley resident, Richard Casey’s car, trapping Casey in his vehicle which became engulfed in flames, and later resulting in Casey’s death.
