BRAWLEY – The Brawley city council named finance director, Ruby D. Walla, as city treasurer at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
The city treasurer position was left vacant due to the untimely passing of Miguel Miranda on December 15, 2015. Miranda was elected to the position in November of 2015.
In previous meetings, the council discussed that possibility of converting the city treasurer from an elected position to an appointed one.
“We have determined to keep this an elected position for one more term,” said Mayor Donnie Wharton.
The public will have the chance to vote the conversion at the next election.
Walla will be city treasurer until the next municipal election in November 2017, at which time interested parties can run for the remainder of the four-year term.
In other business, the council voted to replace aging bleachers at Hinojosa and Gonzales Parks at a cost of $41,200. These are the city’s most utilized parks. The city plans on replacing other park bleachers in phases.
