BRAWLEY — Purple served a purpose on February 13, Saturday, as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life team looked to promote their next event. The city of Brawley was decorated purple as the team placed ribbons around Main Street raising awareness for their upcoming relay.
“It gives people in the community awareness of what’s happening,” explained Ceci Gastelo, the Relay for Life event leader. “A lot of people don’t understand what the purple bow is. They just think someone is going to have a party and that’s the way to go. We’re kind of letting them know there is going to be a party and it’s happening in April.”
Along various locations down Main Street, hand-made purple ribbons were strategically placed in frequented areas such as Vons, city hall, and the local post office. Team members created the bows by hand using purple fabric.
“We get volunteers to go out and hang these up with us,” said Laura Figueroa, a team member. “Since 8 a.m. we’ve been putting bows down Main Street, from 111 all the way to Vons. We’ve been doing this promotion since 2011 and I think the bows definitely help because people then ask what the bows are for and research them.”
“I think we did pretty good this morning. I think we’ve got most of the town painted,” said Gastelo. “Although the event happens in April, we are live 24/7. If anybody has any questions or concerns on regarding what they can do for someone in their family that has cancer, they know they can call me or contact the office.”
The Relay For Life of Brawley will take place Saturday, April 9 at 10:00 am at Cattle Call Park.[envira-gallery id=”72392″]
