Prison Clean-up crew member killed on I-8

(August 21, 2012, EL CENTRO) – On Tuesday, August 17, a highway clean-up crew composed of inmates from the Calipatria State Prison were picking up trash on the right hand shoulder along Interstate 8 east when Ruben Quezada, 58 of Brawley, driving a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, drifted into the right hand shoulder.
Quezada struck Calvin Edwards, 23, and Richard Warrick, 46. Edwards was killed upon impact and Warrick suffered minor injuries and taken by Gold Cross ambulance to El Centro Regional Medical Center.
The driver, Quezada, had major injuries due to his car traveling across the eastbound lanes after striking the two men and eventually rolling onto the dirt center divider.
Quezada was taken by Reach helicopter to UCSD Medical Center.
According to investigating officer Lizarraga the collision remains under investigation.
