EL CENTRO – An El Centro police officer working a special enforcement detail noticed a maroon Ford Raptor pickup traveling southbound on Highway 111 at a high rate of speed, Tuesday, April 18, at 5:30 p.m. The officer followed the Ford and estimated the Ford’s speed to be approximately 80 miles per hour, well above the posted speed limit.
The officer conducted an enforcement stop on the Ford and its occupants on Highway 111 near McCabe Road for the speed violation. While speaking with the occupants the officer noticed they appeared extremely nervous and acted abnormally. The officer asked for and received consent to search the vehicle and requested a police K‐9 respond to assist.
K‐9 Bico arrived on scene and alerted to the rear of the pickup. An initial search of the vehicle on scene did not turn up any contraband and the vehicle was taken to the west port of entry to be X‐rayed. The X‐ray revealed several objects concealed within the spare tire of the vehicle. Officers searched the spare tire and located a large amount of United States currency estimated to be $1,000,000.00.
The occupants of the vehicle denied knowledge or ownership of the currency and were released from custody. The police department is continuing their investigation into the source of the money.
