Police arrest three juveniles in animal cruelty case

EL CENTRO – El Centro police dispatched officers to the Imperial Valley Humane Society, February 14, at 8:49 p.m., regarding an animal cruelty report.

The reporting party obtained a video from social media allegedly showing a Hispanic male juvenile intentionally harming an animal, ultimately leading to its demise. The video also showed two other juveniles allegedly participating in this act, which appeared to have been recorded using one of their cell phones.

In the video the suspected juveniles could be heard laughing as they videoed the abuse they subjected the mouse and the death of the animal.
El Centro police officers worked with El Centro Animal Control to identify the juveniles in the video and conducted follow-up inquiries. During the investigation the animal control officers determined the juveniles purchased the mouse from a local pet store just prior to killing it. The investigation concluded with the arrest of the three juveniles yesterday, March 8, 2017. All three were issued an appearance date and the matter will be handled in juvenile court.
“This is a disappointing and senseless act. It is our hope these juveniles realize the seriousness of their actions and learn a lesson from this,” according to Robert Sawyer, El Centro Police Commander.
