SALTON CITY — Hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel spilled Tuesday night onto Hwy 86 after the axle tractor pulling a 2-axle trailer driven by Jorge Garcia overturned.
Around 9 pm, Garcia was driving a Freightliner 3-axle tractor/trailer northbound on Hwy 86 south of Air Park Road near Salton City at approximately 55 miles per hour in the slow lane. Garcia allowed his vehicle combination to drift off the east paved road edge and onto the right dirt shoulder.
Garcia turned to the left, over correcting, and re-entered the northbound lane. Garcia lost control of his vehicle and the combination overturned onto its right side in the northbound traffic lanes.
This caused both the right and the left side fuel tanks ruptured and spilled approximately 150-200 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway and partially on the dirt shoulder.
Due to the spill of hazardous material, diesel, the roadway was shut down and traffic was diverted to the center median according to investigating CHP officer, Isidro Centeno.
Cal Trans was called and began managing traffic and clean-up operations. Cal-Trans closed the road until clean up was completed.
