EL CENTRO – The Central Spartans’ baseball team hosted the Southwest Eagles last Tuesday evening in a battle of strength, determination, and both mental and physical endurance. The Spartans pulled away early in the game, yet the Eagles gave them a run for their money as they racked up the points towards the end. However, the Spartans still managed to secure a close 5-4 victory.
The action intensified the last few innings of the game. For most the game, the Spartans had dominated the game on both sides of the plate and led by several runs. Eagle batters were dropping like flies and had nothing in their bullpen to catch the Spartans. That is, until the Eagles threw in a relief pitcher.
The Spartans couldn’t keep up with this change by the Eagles and began to falter. Seizing their opportunity, the Eagles pushed against the Spartan’s defense, and closed the gap the Spartans created. It looked like the Eagles were going to take their momentum all the way to the bank.
Refusing to let their cross-town rivals best them, the Spartans rallied and scored one last run for the win.
For the Spartans, senior Angel Ramirez led offensively going 3-3 with one run scored and one RBI. After Ramirez followed senior Alex Quiroz and junior Michael Saucedo. Quiroz was 2-4 with one RBI and Saucedo was 1-2, also with an RBI.
For the Eagles, it was junior Arturo Jazek who was 2-3 with two RBIs. After Jazek was junior Miguel Rodriguez who was 1-3 with the team’s only other RBI. Also doing well for the Eagles was senior Baron Phillips who was 3-3 with one run scored.[envira-gallery id=”57441″]
