CALEXICO â€“ The Consulate of Mexico in Calexico, CA bestowed one of its highest honors to Dr. Sandra Kofford; the prestigious National Ohtli Award. The Ohtli Award recognizes Mexican, Mexican-American, or Latino leaders whose efforts have contributed significantly to the empowerment of Mexican communities abroad.
Ohtli is a NÃ¡huatl word that means “pathway” in English, or “camino” in Spanish. Dr. Kofford has been the Senior Director of Imperial County Office of Educationâ€™s Migrant Education Program since 2007. The Migrant Education Program (MEP) is a federally funded program, authorized under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 designed to provide supplementary educational and support services to identified migrant students. Currently Region 6 enrollment is approximately 7,754 migrant students ages 3-21.
