CALEXICO — At approximately 2:13 p.m. on Thursday, the Calexico Police Department (CDP) received a 9-1-1 call from a frantic woman stating that her cousin was in the process of giving birth in the downtown area. An ambulance was dispatched, along with a CPD officer to the intersection of First Street and Rockwood Avenue.
Officer Brian Porras who was one block away conducting a walk-through safety check of a city park, reportedly ran to that location and found the woman lying on the sidewalk and came to her aid.
According to reports, the child was crowning and the woman was giving birth. Officer Porras assisted the woman and kept the newborn from contact with the sidewalk. The child was delivered safely.
When Calexico emergency medical personnel arrived, they safely took over the scene. The woman and newborn were transported to the hospital and are reportedly in stable condition.
