CALEXICO – In recognition for his outstanding commitment to victim advocacy, Calexico Police Officer Albert Llanas was presented with the Elsa Hechanova Memorial Award during Tuesday’s board meeting.

Assistant District Attorney Deborah D. Owen and the Board of Supervisors honored Llanas who broke down in tears during the acknowledgment.

“Officer Llanas goes above and beyond his duty and makes our community a better place,” said Owen. “When he goes and talks to teens and hears their needs, he immediately begins to organize fundraisers during his own time and expects nothing in return.”

Officer Llanas is highly involved with the community and donates much of his time in events such as Kids N Badges, according to Owen.

“I love helping out my community. When a victim needs something, I do whatever it takes to help them out,” said Llanas.

In 2015, the Imperial County District Attorney’s office instituted the Elsa Hechanova Memorial Award to honor individuals for their outstanding commitment to serving crime victims in Imperial County. The award is dedicated to Elsa Hechanova, a long time county resident who was murdered in her home.

Llanas said he never expected to receive such an honor and said he was very humble and grateful to the agencies who nominated him.
