PALM SPRINGS – A teen who went missing overnight and was found by Palm Springs police Thursday morning was sexually assaulted during that time period, police have announced.
The girl’s family told police at about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday that she had been missing for three hours after leaving the house and going for a run, Palm Springs Police Sgt. Harvey Reed said.
He said her disappearance was “out of character, and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance were not known at the time of the report.”
Police, a California Highway Patrol aircraft crew and a bloodhound from a volunteer group searched for her, and she was found around 7:30 a.m. in Palm Springs.
“Palm Springs Police Detectives spoke with the juvenile and their investigation determined she was the victim of a sexual assault,” Reed said.
“Investigators have determined that the victim was abducted prior to being sexually assaulted,” he added in a press release update.
He said the only suspect information police have is that the alleged attacker was a male driving a pickup with tinted windows.
Anyone with information about the assault was asked to call a police tip line at (760) 778-8411 or submit an anonymous tip to Coachella Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-7867.
