EL CENTRO – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Station, arrested a man suspected of alien smuggling after five men were discovered locked inside a hot railroad boxcar on Friday.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., El Centro Sector Radio notified agents of a 911 distress call received from the El Centro Police Department (ECPD). ECPD advised that they, along with EMS, were at the railroad tracks near the intersection of Clark Road and El Dorado Avenue with six possible migrants that were rescued from a railroad boxcar. All six men required medical attention for treatment of dehydration symptoms.
Agents arrived on scene and determined that five men were Mexican nationals and were illegally present in the United States, and one man claimed United States citizenship. The men were provided an ice chest with water and a portable cooler when hidden inside the boxcar. After the portable cooler became inoperative and they ran out of water, they called 911 to ask for help.
“We all have the same goal making our community a safer place for our families,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. “By working together, and sharing information, we will be better suited to dismantle these criminal organizations and deliver a consequence to these people who try to exploit our borders and put people’s lives in danger.”
All of the men were cleared from the hospital and were transported back to El Centro Station to be processed. The United States citizen that was with the group is being prosecuted for alien smuggling.
