EL CENTRO – Gary Wyatt, District 4, met with Lee Quarcelino, president of the local chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars, to see if there was any interest among veterans in making Memory Gardens Cemetery into a veteran’s cemetery. Memory Gardens went into foreclosure in 2009 and has fallen into disrepair.
Wyatt said the plans to reclaim the cemetery depend upon the county gaining control over the property. Quarcelino showed interest in the project if the board was able to acquire the cemetery.
“This is looking to solve that dilemma that is Memory Gardens, that horrible place that has been allowed to fall into disrepair, such as it has. It is a disgrace to those that are there, to the families that have somebody there, and to the veterans that are buried there. All of the people of the Imperial Valley should be embarrassed by it,” Wyatt said.
Wyatt hopes by involving the veterans and acquiring the cemetery, Memory Gardens could be brought back to a respectable resting ground for the dead.
