SALTON CITY – Border agents arrested a man on suspicion of trying to smuggle heroin in his shoes Wednesday night at the Highway 86 checkpoint near Salton City.

The 20-year-old man was a passenger in a white 1993 Toyota Camry that approached the Highway 86 checkpoint near Salton City, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency.

The car approached the checkpoint at about 10:50 p.m. and authorities determined the driver, a 49-year-old man, was giving the younger man a ride in an unlicensed taxi.

Both men were turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
