CALEXICO – Turning a fundraiser into a night of rock and roll, the Calexico Chamber of Commerce hosted a concert featuring the band “Los Outpatients” at the Gran Plaza Outlets Friday evening where close to 100 people enjoyed the music while sipping on their favorite drinks.

“Today’s event is a fundraiser for the 25th Annual Mariachi Festival that is soon approaching,” said Hildy Carrillo, executive director of the Calexico Chamber of Commerce.

Lead by Michael W. Horn, who in his other career is director of the county’s Behavioral Health Services, Los Outpatients is a local band of which most members are also employed at the Imperial County Behavioral Health Services facility in El Centro.

“It’s been a long day for us but definitely worth it,” said Horn. “We enjoy what we do and especially helping our community.”

“Los Outpatients” first played together at the Behavioral Health Services employee appreciation luncheon twelve years ago and during the past two years began performing at various fundraisers.

Horn said the group plays free of charge, and normally performs between five to six times during the year.

“The chamber is very thankful to Los Outpatients,” said Carrillo. “We know that they are very busy in their regular work and they took the time to come out and put on this event. They are a great group of guys.”

The group played mostly music from the ’80s,  which included “Jenny (867-5309),” “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” and “La Malageña.”

“This music is from my era,” said Rosalva Guicho, a Calexico resident. “It reminds me of when I was a young adult and brings back many memories. I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy our local talent.”

The $20 donation included loads of fun, great music, sandwiches and beer.

“This event was awesome!” said Liza Barraza, an assistant director at the Imperial County Department of Child Support Services. She was also accompanied by family members. “I enjoyed listening to live music in my hometown, plus any event where ‘Los Outpatients’ play is sure to draw in a good crowd. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
