IMPERIAL – On December 31st, at approximately 11:15 p.m., Itza Perea (30, Imperial), and her 1-year-old son were passengers in a vehicle traveling south on Highway86, near Barioni Blvd.
Mrs. Perea noticed her baby gasping for air and convulsing.
Mrs. Perea spotted the El Centro CHP Area office as she traveled south on Highway 86.
Mrs. Perea stopped at the office and attempted to open the front door, which was closed for business.
She picked up the emergency telephone mounted on the wall next to the front door. Mrs. Perea began hysterically screaming, “Please help me! My baby is dying! He is chocking!”
Officer Sal Acevedo was near the end of his shift and working on reports at the office when a dispatcher notified him of the incident.
Officer Acevedo immediately responded to the front door and noticed the baby was unconscious and not breathing.
Officer Acevedo took the baby from Mrs. Perea and performed life saving measures to remove the object and save the child.
The baby regained consciousness and started crying. Mrs. Perea and her son were transported from the scene by Gold Cross Ambulance.
