BRAWLEY – Country music blared from the overhead speakers as riders of all ages warmed up their trusty steeds in anticipation of a day of races, triumphs, and defeat.
Some riders legs barely cleared the top of their horses’ ribcage while other ‘seasoned’ riders reminisced of glory days gone by.
Soon the arena manager shooed everyone out of the arena to bring in this year’s Cattle Call Queens and court to start the show with the Star Spangled Banner. Hats and hands covered hearts as the multi-generational crowd honored country and flag.
The gymkhana sponsored by the Barbara Worth Brigadettes on January 5, 2013 was a great success. This “game day” was chaired by Marie DeYesso, a BWB member, and was held at the KD Danch Arena south of Brawley.
Individual events included Keyhole, Washington Poles, Barrel Race, Potato Race, Speed Barrels and Carrot Race. Team events were Fox and Hound, Ribbon Race and the Hide Race.
High Point Winners in their respective age divisions were the following: Ruby Robbins (8 and under); Cyleigh Nelson (9 thru 13); Chelsey Roper (14 thru 17); Jacque Hannon (18 thru 39) and Dale Griggs (40+). Likewise, ribbons and awards were presented to participants who placed first thru fifth place.
This gymkhana represents the club’s main fundraising efforts for the year. In addition to offsetting club expenses, a portion of the proceeds went to the Imperial County Humane Society.
Corporate sponsors included Dale Griggs, Tom Brundy Hay, Martin Hydroblasting, Cal Energy, Brawley Express and Locher Trucking. Additionally, individuals contributed to specific class sponsorships. The Brigadettes are grateful for the community support given their annual event and look forward to a continued success with this event in the future.
The BWB gymkhana is part of the KD Danch Gymkhana Belt Buckle Series and the points earned go toward year end high point.
