IMPERIAL — The Imperial Tigers girls basketball team hosted the Central Spartans December 13, where the lady Tigers advanced their record to 7-0, after defeating the Spartans 56 to 33.
Though the start of the game began with a slow pace, the Spartans struck first with Destiny Salgado (#23), driving the ball down the court making an easy layup for her team.
Shortly after the fast break by Salgado, Imperial quickly answered back by taking the lead when Britany Jarvis (#10) posted up at the three-point line and sank one in for three points, making the score six to two.
Salgado soon stole the ball and passed to Sharde Marcus (#2) for a layup, lowering the deficit. The Tigers would maintain their lead going into the second period with a score of 14 to 8.
Staring off the second half of play, Imperial drew a foul, sending senior Camryn Seaman (#1) to the free throw line. Seaman’s attempts gave her team an extra point, increasing the Tiger lead by seven points. Imperial kept this momentum going, rebounding the ball and setting up on their side of the court. Andrea Olguin (#11), took advantage of the opportunity as she shot from under the basket, completing a successful run for the Tigers.
As both teams continued to put up points through halftime, the Tigers began to lag and struggled to maintain their sizable lead, as the Spartans lowered their shortfall to five with a score of 21 to 16.
Heading in the second half of play, Imperial kept grinding on the court, moving their lead to ten points, and giving the team more breathing room. Central responded with a fast break play, where Salgado made a two-pointer, keeping the Spartans close in the game.
Once again, the Tigers came back with another rebound and Kaylyn Phillips shot from way back for three points, making the score 38 to 29, still in Imperial’s favor. Going through the rest of the third and fourth quarter, both teams drove back and forth, putting up points, but the Tigers held and increased their lead for the rest of the game, defeating the Spartans 56 to 33, keeping their undefeated record.
With this win, the lady Tigers will hit the road to take on Otay Ranch on December 16, to start a neutral Coronado Holiday Invitational tournament in Chula Vista, with hopes of keeping their streak alive.
