CALEXICO — On Senior Night in Calexico, the Lady Bulldogs made quick work of the Holtville Vikings, winning in straight sets (25-14, 25-18, 25-14) to claim fourth place in Imperial Valley League Thursday, and close out the girls’ varsity volleyball regular season.
Calexico’s Kayla Rubio (#20) got her team going early in the first set contributing two imposing spikes to put Holtville in an immediate 5-1 hole.
The Vikings fought back to tie the game up at 8-8 when Amaya Irunguay (#9) set up teammate Sarah Grizzle (#6) for a crashing spike of her own.
Natalia Pacheco (#25) of the Lady Bulldogs (#25) found holes in Holtville’s defense, scoring two aces and polishing off the first set (25-14) with a slap from the corner.
In the second set, Holtville returned the favor to lead 5-1 with the aggressive play of Irunguay netting an assist and an ace.
Later in the second set, Calexico’s Luanna Gutierrez (#7) tacked on two aces while Rubio sent one into the hardwood to knot the game up at 11-11.
A handful of miscues by the Vikings, coupled with the tight fisted defensive play of the Lady Bulldogs’ Iran Alvarez (#22) would allow the set to slip away from Holtville (25-18).
With a 7-7 tie in the final set, Calexico’s Pacheco stuffed a spike attempt by Holtville and scored three consecutive points to go up 15-8.
The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of late errors to run away with it in the end, finishing off the Vikings 25-14.
“We have a great group of girls this season,” said Claudia Maeda, the Bulldogs’ varsity volleyball head coach. “We love each other, and we have no drama. Losing seven seniors this year, we have to finish strong to make a strong push for the playoffs.”
