BRAWLEY – The Brawley Union High Girls’ basketball team met the Mount Miguel Matadors Monday night in the Wildcats’ home opener of the 2013-2014 season. The result was a rough thirty three-point loss to the Matadors 41-74.
From the beginning of the first quarter the Matadors seemed to be a step quicker and better. They kept to their assignments defensively and were on point throughout the entire night.
The Matadors jumped out to 6-17 lead early in the first quarter behind quick paced drives and layups from team captain and power forward, Dejanay Pope. The closest it would get for the Wildcats was in the second quarter with a seven -point run led By Ashlyn Jauregui and Meriah Overton to cut the lead to 25-34.
From there it was all Matadors for the rest of the night. With the score 37-49 in the third quarter the Matadors were able to reel off twenty two unanswered points putting the game out of reach for the wildcats.
“Their height and quickness got to us in the second half along with their pressure, and we didn’t handle it very well,” said head coach Mike Pacheco after the contest.
After the tough loss the Wildcats look to rebound against El Camino on Wednesday night also at home.
“Our goal is to get back to winning our league so are going to be working hard,” said Pacheco looking toward the IVL League.
