EL CENTRO – The atmosphere was warm and welcoming Saturday morning as members of the First United Methodist Church gathered together for their annual Gospel Brunch. The event was presented by the Imperial Valley Chamber Singers and was open to all members of the congregation.

The Imperial Valley Chamber Singers are directed by Anita Slobig. They began their performance with Take Me to the Water and Amazing Grace. After a short break that allowed patrons to visit the homemade buffet, the Chamber Singers continued their performance.

Director Anita Slobig is always happy to participate in the Gospel Brunch every year.

She stated, “The Chamber Singers does a series of concerts every year and the Gospel Brunch is one of the best and most popular ones. We’ve been doing this for several years now and we get a lot of people that come back yearly. It’s a really fun time with uplifting music and we’re singing not only for God’s glory but also because we are all musicians who love to work together.”

Barbara Nilson of Holtville has sung with the Chamber Singers for almost 33 years and enjoys the experiences she has had, along with working with all the different people.

“Those of us in the group, we would sing, even if we had no audience. However, it is so much more enjoyable to sing in front of people and to have an audience enjoy the performance as much as we love preparing for it,” stated Nilson.

“When we have our rehearsals, we’re crazy because we are all different ages, we all have different types of personalities and throughout the years we’ve had all different kinds of people in this group. This all makes it so much fun. And, we love our director which makes it that much more enjoyable.”
