It’s time to think about fair entries

IMPERIAL – With the 2013 edition of the California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta less than 12 weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about entering an exhibit and competing for some of the $13,000 in cash prizes that are handed out each year to fair exhibitors.

This year’s 10-day fair, with its theme of “Experience the Magic” runs March 1 through March 10, 2013.

“If you can make it, bake it, sew it, grow it or show it, there is some kind of category available to local hobbyists and crafters,“ said Fair CEO Theresa Garcia.

The fair has embarked on a proactive effort to boost adult entries and for the second year will hold a “Fair Entries 101” class. It will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. January 19 in the IV Expo Board Room on the fairgrounds at 200 E. Second St., Imperial. The board room is just north of the main fair office.

Although the adult entry form deadline is also that day, exhibit superintendents will be on hand to help people fill out the paperwork and answer questions.

The actual entries are not needed until closer to fair time. The juniors’ entry deadline is January 25.

There are many ways for people to participate in the fair. All of the categories are included in the Exhibitor Handbook posted on the fair website at All of the categories are listed in the handbook as well as the potential cash prizes or “premiums” which total $13,000.

“If you are not sure what department, division or class your item should be entered into, please plan to come to our workshop,” Garcia said. “There is something uniquely suited to you: from flowers to quilts to sauces and marinades to photos and collections,” she added.
