IMPERIAL â€“ The 11-12 year-old Imperial All-Stars hosted Calexico, Saturday, July 2 with a gutsy game where Imperial ralliedÂ late surpassing Calexico by making good use of theirÂ bats, winning 20-9.
Calexico started scoring late in the third inning with six runs. Calexico’s Leonardo Veliz (2) singled to second base to lead the scoring. Joaquin Alvarado (8) came to the plate ready to swing with a line drive to first base bringing his teammate home. Andres Llamas (29) and Jaihden Torres (15) both swung successfully bringing the inning scores to 6-0.
At the fourth,Imperial still struggled at bat, until David Cornejo (21) came to the plate for a double. Putting himself into scoring position, Xavier Soto (40) hit a hard line drive for a RBI triple giving Imperial the first run of the night. Imperial managed to bring in two more runs in the fourth to cut their deficit in half, 6-3 Calexico.
Moving through the sixth inning, Calexico rallied with everyone on their team connecting with the ball, scoring three more runs.
Imperials bats had to strike gold, and they did. Every batter in the line-up tookÂ control of the game. In the sixth inning, Tigers started their rally with pitch-hitter Collado (17) on base with a hard hit triple to left field. Steven Shaw (28) hit a short fly ball over the second basemanâ€™s head for a single of his own, eventually crossing the plate to score. Imperial finished the game with a big come-from-behind win, with the final score, 20 to 9. With this win in the bag for Imperial All Stars, they will move to play Holtvilleâ€™s All-Star team for their second match up of the tournament.
