IMPERIAL â€“ The Imperial Tigerâ€™s volleyball team hosted the Gila Ridge Hawks September 8, where the Tigers came out on top winning the match three sets to one.
With the game starting off in speedy fashion, both teams rallied to try and break the close scoring set. As the scores climbed to double digits, the lady Tigers showed off their training skills by pushing further ahead Gila Ridge. Imperial’s Camryn Seaman (#13), a senior, boosted her team, getting 32 kills throughout the match. Imperial ended the first set with a spike, making the final score 25-15.
Going into the second set of the match, Imperial looked to add to their lead as they switched sides. And in a repeat of the first set, the game started off close with both teams quickly putting up points.
Gila Ridgeâ€™s Hannah Weller (#3) showcased her talents with 44 kills of her own throughout the match. With Gila Ridge hanging on throughout the set, Imperial speeded up the pace and outscored the Hawks late in the second set. As Imperial’s lead scorer, Seaman was instrumental again for the win, gaining the final point of the set and ending with a score of 25-19.
With the match growing late, Gila Ridge had one final chance to stop the shut out. Gila Ridgeâ€™s Katiana Oviedo (#7), a Â junior, came through for her team with a total number of 14 serving aces throughout the crucial set.
But Imperial’s Analia Sotelo (#23) fought back, getting five blocks to help her team make a come back. With Imperial quickly diminishing the Hawkâ€™s lead, Gila Ridge finally closed the door with the last point of the close scoring set that ended with a final score of 25-22.
Fans from both schools packed the gymnasium, cheering on their teams as the girls took to the court for what would be the fourth and final set of the evening.
Imperial was first to score, taking a small lead over the Hawks with Imperial’s Karen Hogue (#7) spiking the ball getting a kill of her own. As the scores climbed to 25, both teams played great defense.
Kylie Espinoza (#2) from Gila Ridge had the most digs, totaling 38 for the game. On Imperial’s side, Alyssa Chavarria (#4) boosted her team with a total number of 34 digs.
Imperial finished the fourth set with a hard hit spike by Seaman making the final score 25-22. With this suspenseful game ending set, Imperial claimed victory winning the match 3-1 and bringing their overall record to 4-3.
With this win under the Tigers’ paws, they will face the Palo Verde Yellow Jackets September 13, for the first conference game of the season.
