EL CENTRO – The Imperial Valley United for Joint Strike fighter coalition has successfully extended the deadline for comments on the Navy’s choice regarding homebasing the F-35c Joint Strike Fighter at either NAF El Centro or NAS Lemoore.
The new deadline is May 7 and the coalition is making one last push for comments.
According to coalition member, Brad Luckey, “If the Navy bases the Joint Strike Fighter at NAF El Centro, there would be hundreds of new high paying jobs in our region, an enhanced quality of life and assured long term survival of our base.”
According to the group’s research, they have determined that the Navy could save billions of dollars over the life of the aircraft if it chooses NAF El Centro. The desert location offers practically year round flying conditions, whereas Lemoore is fogged in a great deal of the year. Because the aircraft the F-35C will replace, the F-16’s, are already stationed at Lemoore, the pilots regularly fly them to the Imperial Valley to use the bombing ranges and take advantage of the weather. By homebasing the Navy’s newest jets in El Centro, the task force argues that the Navy will have substantial savings.
