Imperial Valley Strike Team deployed to Soberanes fire

MONTEREY COUNTY — The Imperial Valley Strike Team have had an active few weeks after deployment to fight the Santa Clarita Sand Fire and now reassigned to join other fire fighting teams in Monterey County.

“The Imperial Valley Strike Force is currently assigned to the Soberanes Fire. They have been working 24-hour shifts on and off are currently on the line today,” said Imperial County Fire Chief and Office of Emergency Services Coordinator Tony Rouhotas. “They were reassigned from the Sands Fire on Tuesday and sent up north to assist.”

The team consists of 21 firefighters from Brawley, Holtville, Calexico, Imperial County, and Calipatria.

Chief Metcado from Calexico is the leader of the group.

According to the latest report, the Monterey County fire has burned 23,568 acres, and is 10 % contained. The fire has destroyed 20 homes and 2 outbuildings. They report the fire is currently threatening 2,000 structures. There are several road closures and several evacuations, though the exact number of evacuations has not been released.
