EL CENTRO – The Imperial County Public Health Department recognized the Imperial Valley Housing Authority on May 1, 2013, for adopting a 100% smoke-free policy at the Cedar Apartments located in El Centro, California. The policy will eliminate smoking of tobacco products in all 20 units and on the entire property, including, common areas, entryways, every building and adjoining grounds.

The adoption of the smoke-free policy, which went into effect March 1, 2013, is an enormous accomplishment for Imperial County residents as it will improve the living conditions of its tenants by stopping the drifting of secondhand smoke and preventing diseases such as asthma, allergies, eye irritation, respiratory tract infections and cancer in individuals.

The smoke-free policy adoption at Cedar Apartments was as a result of collaborative efforts among the Imperial Valley Housing Authority, Cedar Apartments Board of Residents, Imperial County Public Health Department and members of the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Imperial County.
