EL CENTRO- The Imperial Valley Girls’ Softball League held its 2016 End of Season Tournament and closing ceremonies at Debbie Pittman Park in El Centro, Thursday night.
Three age groups composed the sports competition: eight-and-under, 10-and-under, and 12-and-under. The top four teams of each Valleywide sub league earned the right to participate in the final single elimination tournament.
Each of the park’s three fields were utilized simultaneously- one for each group’s championship game.
Before play began, a ceremony dedicated the middle field to Tom Pechtle Sr. who founded the park in 1964.
“Just like a lot of us, Tom Pechtle Sr. became involved with girls’ softball because his daughter wanted to play. And now we have this league that has evolved so much,” informed league director James Clark.
On field one, the 10-and-under title game was a cross town match-up between The Big Dawgs and Fogball, both Calexico teams.
Field two hosted the 12-and-under championship, a feline frenzy between the two Brawley teams, Wildcats vs. Wildcats.
The Diamond Angels of El Centro tangled with the Brawley Wildcats in field three for the eight-and-under crown. In a pitching duel, the Wildcats squeaked out the victory 4-0.
The other two games were impacted by a Soft-Stop.
“If the seven innings haven’t finished within an hour and a half elapsed time, we then enforce a Soft-Stop which immediately ends the game after the conclusion of the current inning,” explained Clark.
At the time of the Soft-Stop in field one the scoreboard read 14-5 in favor of Calexico Fogball over the Big Dawgs.
The Wildcats, with the help of shortstop Brianna Lopez, fended off a late comeback attempt in the field two of the Brawley intercity match-up, with a win of 16-9.
All championship participants were awarded medals for first and second place.
