IMPERIAL — The Imperial Tigers’ baseball team hosted the Holtville Vikings on April 5, where the Tigers clinched a win, bringing its league record to 1-0-0, overall 7-3-1, and leaving the Holtville Vikings winless in league play.
On the first league game for the Tigers, they showed an ability to zero in on the stitches on the ball and scored five runs, bringing the final score to 5-2.
Early on in the battle, both teams failed to score, leaving base runners at the end of their ups. Finally, Imperial brought a run across in the bottom of the third, giving the Tigers the lead. At Holtville’s next bat in the top of the fourth, the Vikings rose to the challenge with two runs of their own, changing the leader board.
Imperial went on keeping their bats hot with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and one other run in the sixth, sealing Holtville’s fate.
Imperial’s Diego Mellos had two of the six hits with one RBI to help his team capture the victory. Freshman Kobby Lopez contributed one hit and an RBI. Diego Favial and Lambert Soto drove in one run each to aid their team. Imperial’s pitcher, Christian Zamudio, earned the win for the game by shutting down the Viking’s offense for most of the game.
“We did start off slow in tonight’s game with our bats, but our team was coming back from a break in playing,” said Tigers Head Coach Brian Martin. “But once we started to see the ball a little bit more, throughout the game we were able to come through and get the job done.”[envira-gallery id=”75262″]
