LA JOLLA – The Imperial Tigers football team made their third appearance in the SDFNL Kickoff Classic Saturday hosted by the La Jolla Country Day High School in Torrey Pines. The event is sponsored by the San Diego Football Nights Lights Magazine (SDFNL). In the kickoff, Imperial scrimmaged against the Morse Tigers, where Imperial lost with a final score of 41-9.
“We have a lot to work on before our first game”, said Imperial’s head coach Kerry Legarra, “but it was a good eye-opener for the staff and players to see other competition and see what areas need work the most.”
With Imperial down most of the game, they fought until the end, scoring their only touchdown of the game late in the second half.
Imperial’s Ted Vogel (9) caught a pass by Wyatt Rodriguez (15) and ran it into the in zone for a touchdown. Imperial other three points were from a field goal attempt by Santiago Del La Torre (13).
“The competition in this tournament is a lot stiffer than others, and we will continue to come to this tournament to practice before the start of our season,” said Legarra.
For the Morse Tigers, their running back Martell Irby had a majority of the team’s yards and scored three of the team’s six touchdowns of the scrimmage.
The Imperial Tigers will start off the regular season playing Cibola High School on August 26.
Another team from Imperial’s league that also took part in the SDFNL Kickoff Classic were the Palo Verde Yellow Jackets. Palo Verde faced off against the Escondido White Tigers. The Yellow Jackets demonstrated their hard work over the off-season, beating the White Tigers 20-0.
Palo Verde will play Vincent Memorial on August 27 to kickoff their season.
