EL CENTRO РThe Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors today approved the selection of a consulting firm that will provide direction and detailed analysis for restoration and renewable energy development at the Salton Sea.

The selection was based on responses to a Secondary Request for Proposal, which was released in July 2014. In total, nine companies responded to the request with the Dudek team, comprised of individuals from Dudek, CardnoEntrix, PMC Inc. HDR and others, being ranked number one in the executive summary, key personnel, company experience and local environmental categories by all members of the selection committee.

“Developed by IID in collaboration with local stakeholders, the district has identified an initial phased approach to Salton Sea restoration,” said Bruce Wilcox, who oversees IID’s environmental projects at the sea. “We expect projects may change as the plan evolves; however, our goal of identifying how short-term ecological and public health impacts of a deteriorating and shrinking Salton Sea can be offset by the construction of appropriately-located shallow habitat ponds around the margins of the sea remains unchanged.”

Using a three-phase approach to restoration and renewable energy development in the area, the Dudek team will help the district refine the planning process to move forward with the Salton Sea Restoration and Renewable Energy Initiative by exploring concept designs and cost estimates, as well as evaluating initial on-the-ground projects.

The approach includes:

Phase I: Early start – will include restoration projects currently in development and create a process for implementing instant habitat should funding becomes available (for projects located within the state’s Species Conservation Habitat footprint).

Phase II: Development and implementation- will carry out the work started in Phase I and integrate it with renewable energy development using funding from state or federal grants, the private sector and/ or others.

Phase III: Restoration plan – will integrate Phase I and Phase II into the Salton Sea Restoration and Renewable Energy Initiative. It will include on-the-ground projects that offer both habitat and air quality alongside renewable energy development.
