I-10 Shooting Prompts Brief Freeway Closure in Palm Desert Area

All westbound lanes were closed for a bit Thursday night as authorities investigated a shooting.

PALM DESERT, CA – A stretch of Interstate 10 in the Coachella Valley was briefly closed Thursday night as authorities investigated a freeway shooting in the area, the California Highway Patrol reports. The interstate was closed between Washington and Cook, and traffic was redirected off the freeway and back onto westbound lanes at Cook Street.

The California Highway Patrol closed westbound Interstate 10 at the Washington Street exit in Palm Desert at 6:30 p.m. It reopened within the hour.

Details on the car-to-car shooting, which occurred at around noon, were slim, but the freeway closure was expected to be brief, according to a CHP dispatcher.

The closure came as traffic congestion into the desert was expected to build in anticipation of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which begins its second weekend Friday in Indio.

However, that traffic predominantly flowed eastbound into the Coachella Valley, with the bulk of the congestion expected Friday morning.
