HOLTVILLE – The Holtville Viking’s varsity baseball team hosted the Central Spartans for their second conference game, April 8, that lead to Central’s victory, 5-1, bringing Central’s league record to 1-1, tying them with Southwest.
From the start, the Spartans upper hand showed with bat work, scoring their first three runs in the second and third inning. In the top of the seventh inning, Central’s #20, Luis Flores, hit the ball to the short stop making it safely to first base by an over thrown ball. The error allowed runners on second and third to come home, bringing the score to 5-0 going into last at bats for the Vikings.
Throughout the game Vikings were slow on hitting. The fourth inning their bats lit up with solid connections. However, the Central Spartans brought their defense to the game as well.
In the fifth inning Spartan’s, #20, Luis Flores, made a diving catch at shortstop to make the second out of the inning, preventing runners from advancing and scoring. Central put an end to the Viking rally with a center field catch on a pop up fly.
The Viking drought continued until the seventh, stopping a shutout. Viking’s #14, Ross Bolin, hit a shot over the left fielder’s head and advanced the runner on second home, making the board, 5-1. Bolin’s teammates left him stranded ending the game.
“Our batting started off slow to begin with and has the game grew later, we still couldn’t find our groove.” said the Viking’s head coach, Cory Moreno. “We simply ran into too many double plays and errors this game that stopped us from making a difference in the game.”[envira-gallery id=”75439″]
