SACRAMENTO — State Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), today announced that Governor Brown has signed into law Senate Bill (SB) 745, a bill that helps to bridge the digital divide. SB 745 extends by four years the California Advanced Services Fund (CASF) Public Housing Account and improves the accountability and the reporting of existing programs by the California Public Utilities Commission.
“Broadband is critical to our daily life for school work and homework, opportunities for employment, and access to government programs,†expressed Senator Hueso. “It is my goal to continue to help our residents living in public housing take advantage of broadband services so that they can lead more productive lives through technology access and resources.â€
As a result, residents in these housing units, largely low- and limited-income, will have greater opportunities to connect to the internet in their homes. This bill also institutes other changes to the program, including improving accountability and oversight of the CASF program by requiring additional information in the California Public Utilities Commission’s annual CASF report to the Legislature.
